Coconino High School’s varsity danceline held their 6th annual Mr. Coconino Pageant Fundraiser on November 13th.
Every year, members of the danceline have the opportunity to dress and style male upperclassmen, who have elected to participate, using women’s clothing and makeup.
Seniors Daniel Langston, Jayden Newbury and Cohen Klinger along with juniors Cristo Tabares, Alex Hall, Wesley Garner, Todd Furr and Vince Figueroa all competed for the ultimate crown of Mr. Coconino. Each contestant had to showcase his own talent and clothing style.
“A lot of people show up because it’s funny,” said senior Daniel Langston. “Even though we’re guys, it’s always a good time when we get to show our feminine side.”
“To see guys who act cool at school dress up in women’s clothes and makeup makes it a really fun time for all of us,” junior Cristo Tabares pointed out. “It’s a family show, too, so we get to show how ‘good’ we look in [evening] gowns and other girls’ clothes in front of our families.”
Not only were the contestants excited, but the student body was supportive of their friends, and the cause.
“I think it’s a creative and good way to raise money for the danceline, as well as a good representation of Coconino,” said junior James Kirk. “It probably helps out a lot for them to fund their activities.”
During the show, many students laughed and applauded their fellow classmates as they presented their talents, opinions and fashion styles to the audience.
Afterward, many left surprised, yet rejuvenated by the laughter and fun.
“I did not expect to see such funny wigs and performances,” said junior Riley Snopek. “I thought Vince showed great talent in his dance routine.”
At the evening performance, Junior Wesley Garner won both the prestigious honor of Mr. Coconino and the People’s Choice. Senior Cohen Klinger won runner-up in the competition.
The pageant turned out to be a great success for the danceline fundraiser, as well as fun for those who participated. Hopefully, the tradition will live on to next year, as the next group of junior and senior boys voluntarily “strut their stuff.”
